Q

“Go, Philostrate,
Stir up the Athenian youth to merriments.
Awake the pert and nimble spirit of mirth.
Turn melancholy forth to funerals.
The pale companion is not for our pomp”

A
  • said by Thesus in Act one Scene One
  • said it to philostrate (?)
  • Go, Philostrate, get the young people of Athens ready to celebrate and have a good time. Sadness is only appropriate for funerals. We don’t want it at our festivities.
  • opening of the play Hippolyta & Thesus discussing their wedding day which will occur in four days
20
Q

“Hippolyta, I woo’d thee with my sword,

And won thy love,doing thee injuries”

A
  • said by Thesus in act one scene one
  • said to hippolyta
  • thesus (still talking about the wedding and their love) tells how he won her when she lost a war / battle to him and the price was she must marry him
  • Hippolyta, I wooed you with violence, using my sword, and got you to fall in love with me by injuring you.
21
Q

” the course of true love never did run smooth”

A
  • Lysander to Hermia
  • After Egeus wants to imply the law of Athens, and Thesus says that Hermia can either die,become a nun,or marry Demetrius.
  • Lysander tells how true lovers always have difficulties and obstactles that sytand in the way from the two being together…then goes on to give examples.
22
Q

“Love looks not with the eyes,but with the mind,and therefore is winged by cupid painted blind”

A
  • said by Helena to herself( a soliquoy)
  • love is blind, sometimes we fall in love with the wrong people, who are not best/not meant for us.
  • helena starts saying after lysander and hermia reveal their plan to elope and be together. Then she starts talking about how happy people can be, and how through Athens everyone thinks shes as fair as Hermia but Demetrius does not.
23
Q

” you can play no part but Pyramus,for Pyramus is

a sweet-faced man,a proper man,as one shall see in a lovely gentleman-like man.Therefor you must needs play pyrmaus”

A
  • Quince said this to Bottom( Act one Scene two)
  • You can’t play any part except Pyramus. Because Pyramus is a good-looking man, the most handsome man that you could find on a summer’s day, a lovely gentlemanly man. So you’re the only one who could play Pyramus.
  • Quince explains this to bottom after he keeps insisting he should play all the parts
24
Q

” Either i mistake your shape and making quite,or else you are that shrewd and knavish sprite
called Robin Goodfellow.Are you not he, that frights the maidens of the villagery.”

A
  • one of Titania’s fairies to Puck( act two scene one)
  • after they unintentionally meet in the woods .Fairy is doing chores/orders for her queen/Titania
  • Unless I’m mistaken, you’re that mischievous and naughty spirit named Robin Goodfellow. Aren’t you the one who goes around scaring the maidens in the village,
25
" I love thee not,therefore pursue me not."
- said by Demetrius to Helena (act two scene one) - Helena is still following him - Demetrius believes that she is a nuisance and is telling her to stop following him because he doesn't love her -"Look, I don’t love you, so stop following me around. "
26
"use me but as your spaniel:spurn me,strike me | Neglect me,lose me.Only give me leave,unworthy as i am,to follow you"
-Helena to Demetrius ( act 2 scene 1) -still following Demetrius in the woods , he tells her again that he doesn't love her and he explains that for that she loves him all the more ,that the more he neglects her or beats her she loves him even more -Treat me like you would treat a dog—kick me, hit me, neglect me, try to lose me. Just let me follow behind you, even though I’m not good enough for you. Could I ask for a worse place in your heart than to be treated as you would treat a dog? And yet I would consider it an honor to be your dog. -This tells the reader that Helena is madly in love and has little self-respect. -at least she would get some attentions if she was a dog -get some regard,even if it was beating/hitting thinks that position would be worthy any position that would have her next to him would be worthy
27
``` " What thou seest,when thou dost wake, do it for thy true love take.love and languish for his sake. be it ounce,or cat,or bear pard,or boar with bristled hair, In thy eye that shall appear, when thou wak'st,it is thy dear, wake when some vile thing is near" ```
Act two scene 2 - oberon to sleeping titania - Fairies sing titania to sleep, go do their work,oberon squeezes the potion on sleeping titania's eyes so that when she wakes up she will fall in love with the first thing that she sees, will be distracted and allow for oberon have the young boy - Whatever you see first when you wake up, think of it as your true love. Love him and yearn for him, even if he’s a lynx, a cat, a bear, a leopard, or a wild boar. Whatever’s there when you wake up will be dear to you. Wake up when something nasty is nearby.
28
"Wherefore was i to this keen mockery born? | When at your hands did i deserve this scorn?"
(act two scene two pg 42) -Helena to Lysander After Helena wakes up Lysander ( how had the potion put on his eyes by puck,mistaking him for Demetrius), because she believes he is dead. When he awakes he falls instantly in love with Helena and confesses this love. Helena believes that he is mocking her and trying to hurt her( emotionally) She is asking him what has she done to him to deserve this cruel treatment -Why does everyone always make fun of me? What have I done to deserve this kind of treatment from you?
