a film editing technique to indicate to the audience what a character is seeing… you see character look at something and then cuts to what they’re looking at
Graphic match
when the shape or object in two shots are matched in composition
Mise en scene:
what’s in the entirety of a shot, what makes up of it?… setting
Continuity editing
editing together different but related shots to give viewers the experience of a consistent story in both time and space (helps ground audiences in the reality of the film while establishing a clear and structured narrative)
Establishing shot:
shot that sets up the context or setting of a scene
180 degree rule
two characters in a scene should always have the same left/right relationship with each other (3 cams on the semi circle)
Shot reverse shot
film technique where one character is shown looking at another character, and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character
Match on action
type of film transition that cuts from one shot to a closer shot in order to emphasize an action
Whip pan
camera that quickly whips back and forth to create fast motion..motion blur effect
iris in/out
transition often used in silent films that are used to emphasize certain things in the scene
Narrative structure
the structural framework for a movie, the narrative. story is the action of the movie
reification
when an abstraction is treated as if it were a concrete real event or physical entity
