anthropological linguistics
the study of language and its relation to culture.
anthropological theory
A proposition about which aspects of culture are critical that has been studied and generally accepted.

What are the three coordinate systems?
relative, absolute, and objective centered intrinsic system.
relative coordinate system
The location of an object is expressed in relation to both the viewpoint of the perceiver and position of another object. Thus saying “The cat is to the left of the house”
absolute coordinate system
dealing with the cardinal directions, “The cat is to the south of the house”
intrinsic coordinate system
The cat is in front of the house.
creole
a fully developed language with origins in the combination of elements from two or more languages.
cyclicity
the state of occurring in cycles
deixis
a property of certain lexical items whose meaning requires contextual information to be complete.
dialect
Variety of a language particular to a specific region or social group.
mutually intelligible/uniteligable dialects
the first being a dialect that can be understood the second being that it cannot be understood.
diglossia
a differentiation of two or more languages in regular use. using one type of speaking for work and another for home and friends.
dyad
a group of two people who can be linked for any reason.
ebonics
another way of saying african American Vernacular English.
ethnocentrism
judging other cultures from the perspective of one’s own culture.
ethnography
The systematic study of people and cultures.
gesture calls
A type of signals used by (and common to) all of humanity as a mode of secondary communication.
grammar
the whole system and structure of any language , usually consisting of syntax, morphology, and sometimes phonology and semantics.

Example: plurality, gender, tense, voice
Iconicity
a physical sign whose form resembles its meaning in some way”
inflected
of a word to express a particular grammatical function or attribute. Such as the mood, person, number, case, and or gender.
intonation
Change of pitch in someone’s voice, used to convey different tones or emphasize certain words in a sentence.
