When were the Middle Ages
Between 500 and 1500, it refers to the period between the end of the Roman Empire and the start of the Renaissance
Who is William the Conqueror?
The Duke of Normandy who fought in the Battle of Hastings as depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry. He became the king of England.
What is feudalism?
The system of land ownership where rulers divided land among their followers in return for loyalty and taxes.
What are peasants?
People who worked on a lord’s land
What is a motte and bailey?
A temporary castle a lord would build, the motte was the artificial hill it was built on. The bailey was the area underneath where the soldiers lived.
What was a keep (temp castle)
A wooden tower on top of the motte.
What were the curtain walls in stone castles?
These were walls that enclosed the castle
What was the keep in stone castles?
The main building inside the walls, it held the Lords apartments the great hall and chapel.
What were the dungeons?
These were used to keep prisoners and food underneath the keep.
What were battlements?
These were pathways on top of the curtain walls, where soldiers would patrol.
What was the Bailey in Stone castles?
This was the enclosed area around keep where stables workshops kitchens well for water and soldiers lodging were.
What was the drawbridge, gatehouse and portcullis?
The drawbridge was a bridge that could be lowered over the most, the portcullis was the metal grid that could be lowered over the gate if necessary, the gate house was where the gate was situated in the wall
What was the moat?
A deep ditch around the castle for defence, filled with water.
What was a dowry?
A sum of money or land paid to the groom of a lady
What was the solar?
A sunny room in stone castles where the lady would weave, teach children and play music.
What was the lady’s role?
To bear children, run the household, instruct the servants and supervise the preparation of food.
What was the lord’s role?
To maintain order to his lands, act as a judge and train soldiers.
What would lords and ladies eat?
Beef, pork, duck and other meats. Salted and spiced heavily.
What were trenchers?
Stale pieces of bread used as plates.
What did nobles wear?
Men wore tunics and trousers and women wore dresses.
What were archers?
Soldiers that wore little protective clothing and used bows and arrows to fight.
Who were foot soldiers?
Soldiers that were peasants, they fought with little to no armour and basic weapons.
Who were knights?
Minor nobles who fought on horseback and swore an oath of chivalry.
What was the first step to becoming a knight?
At the age of seven, a boy would live with another Lord (fostering). He would be a page. During his time as a page, he would learn to ride a horse, use a sword, and sing and dance.
