The time from about 500 AD to 1500 AD
Demesne
The piece of land the King/Lord kept for himself
Vassals
The kings followers
Knight
Soldiers who rode into battle on horseback
Serf
A peasant who belonged to the king
Freeman
A peasant who was aloud to leave the manor when he wanted to
Manor
A small farm or village owned by a lord or knight
Tithe
Taxes paid to the church
Commons
Where all the peasants animals grazed together
Open-field system
The fields where all the peasants farmed together
Fallow
When a field was left with nothing growing on it
Crop rotation
A method of growing crops. They would change each crop that was grown every year.
Pottage
Vegetable soup with oatmeal eaten by peasants
Bailiff
A person who the Lord appointed to over see law and order
Sanctuary
If someone was being chased by the bailiff and ran into a church or monastery the bailiff could not arrest them.
Motte and bailey
Motte- a man made small hill
Bailey-an enclosure below the motte were The Lord and his soldiers lived
Moat
A ditch around the castle usually filled with water
Keep
A large square tower in a stone castle. Lived in by The Lord and his family
Battlements
It was at the top of the keep. Soldiers kept watch on the battlements all day
Curtain walls
The outer walls of the castle
Turrets
Strong towers along the walls of the walls of the castle
Drawbridge
A bridge that went into the castle, that could go up and down
Portcullis
Iron grill that could be lowered in front of the castle gate
