Q

How is tectonic form evident in the design of the Doric temple?

A

Tectonic form expresses relations of load and support. It confers dynamic expression on static qualities. It translates static relations into dynamic and anthropomorphic forms. Doric temples express this through post and lintel structure to express the building’s articulation and static coherence. Curvilinear forms occur at transitionary points to emphasise the relationship between gravitational pressure and upward force. (e.g. echinus and fluting). It’s important to note that the structure of the Doric temple allows the viewer to see the points of connection and the elements that keep the structure standning.
