Genocide
the deliberate killing of people from a particular nationality of ethnic group with the purpose of destroying that nation or group
Hatuey
the first prominent freedom fighter of the americas. His armed resistance began in the early 1500s during the age of Colombus. He was killed when he went to cuba to organize a resistance against the spanish who were taking over the cubans land for gold, to fight and kill, and “make us slaves”. He united Africans and indigenous people against the spaniards.
bolivia water protest
took place in 1999 and 2000 in Bolivia. They were protests that took place to fight against the privatization of the city’s municipal water supply company. this significantly upped water prices. People protested this and were met with soldiers and police with tear gas, clubs and bullets. The protestors kept going and won in april 2000. The law was rescinded.
Dakota access pipeline protests
In January of 2016, the dakota access pipeline was approved for construction. the pipeline could destroy ancestral burial grounds and poison the water supply for millions. This led to protests and law enforcement using automatic rifles, sound cannons and concussion grenades agains water protectors.

a medicine woman of the Tongva nation. She helped lead a rebellion in 1785 against spanish missionaries in california, specifically again the mission san gabriel.

new name for the Indio Muerto st which literally translates to dead india. Changed in 2020

was the 10th mission founded in california. Worked on converting and enslaving the chumash people.
spanish fantasy myth
A romanticised version or myth of Spanish history in California. Specifically revolving around the missions. We are not taught the grisly history of the missions and instead the missions today are a tourist hotspot.
Carey McWilliams
Chaired the Sleepy Lagoon defense committee. And helped overturn the convictions of the latino youths who were blamed for the sleepy lagoon murder. He also helped try to cool LA down during the Zoot suit riots.
Zoot suit riots
the zoot suit was a popular from of clothing among black and mexican youths, the thus garnered a racist reputation. Pachucos, when wearing the suits, were categorized by delusional people as menacing gang members. Many people also viewed the zoot suit wearers as people who were dodging the ww2 draft. in 1943 these mobs of US service men began attacking the wearers, stripping them of their clothes and beating them up. This happened in LA
sleepy lagoon defense committee
was formed in 1942 after a man was found murdered and 22 innocent men were charged with murder to defend them. All but one were mexican american, and eventually 12 defendents were convicted of first degree murder.
Josefina Fierro de Bright
a mexican american leader who helped organize resistance against discrimination in america during the great depression. She was the daughter or immigrants who had fled revolution in mexico to settle in california.
mexican american war
Invasion of mexico by the US army in the 1840s. It followed the annexation of Texas. Mexico suffered large losses of life from both military and civilians. The war was caused by the selfishness of america and the BS idea of manifest destiny.
Spanish American War
1890s. Revolts had been occuring in Cuba because they wanted independence and the US backed cuba. The war ended with the treaty of paris and the US gained ownership of puerto rico, guam and the phillipines.
Madison Grant
He was an american lawyer and conservative. He wrote the Passing of the Great Race, one of the most racists texts ever written. He played an active role in restricting immigration and tried to pass a law that banned interracial marriage.
Repatriation and Great Depression
1920s - 30srepatriation was the deportation of up to 2 million mexican americans. Most were american citizens. it was driven by the false idea that jobs would be made and economic prosperity would be restored without those 2 million people.
Bracero Program
1940s. A series of diplmatic accords between mexico and the US, permitted millions of mexican men to work legally in the US on short term labor contracts
Operation Wetback
wetback meant mexican citizens who entered the US by swimming across the rio grande. the operation was a series of massive sweeps targeting mexican immigrants and many mexican american citizens for deportation.
Salt of the Earth Strike
in 1950. Members of a mine went on strike to protest their horrible working conditions. women took part in the picketing.
Red Scare and House Un-American Activities Committee
during the cold war, the threat perceived by communists in america was known as the red scare. HUAC was created to investigate people, companies, and groups who were thought to have communist ties.

civil rights activist who became one of the most prominent women in the international worker’s rights movement. She helped organize many unions for food workers in california.
