EPIC OF GILGAMESH

Discuss the larger significance of the flood scene in the Epic of Gilgamesh

A

The flood hero Utnapichtam is granted immortality by the gods and that fits the immortality theme of the epic.

89
Q

EPIC OF GILGAMESH

Where do you see elements of Gilgamesh growing as a person within the Epic of Gilgamesh

A

Gilgamesh grows as a person after Enkidu dies and he fails to obtain immortality. He then goes back to the kingdom with his changed ways and becomes a noble/heroic king.

Utnapishtim, the survivor of the great flood and the closest human to immortality, rejects Gilgamesh’s plea for immortality. Instead, he imparts a profound lesson about the importance of appreciating the present, the value of human achievements, and the inevitability of death. This encounter humbles Gilgamesh and helps him accept his mortality.

90
Q

EPIC OF GILGAMESH

Why is Enkidu killed by the gods instead of Gilgamesh

A

Enkidu is killed instead because Gilgamesh is family (2/3 divine) whereas Enkidu is made of mud. Furthermore, killing Gilgamesh would be too easy. If the gods want Gilgamesh to change, death would be too easy for him. They needed to make him suffer to change.

91
Q

EPIC OF GILGAMESH

Enkidu was created for what purpose and how successful was he in fulfilling his purpose

A

Enkidu was created to help Gilgamesh become a better ruler. Enkidu was successful because Gilgamesh became a changed man after his death. Prior to his death, Gilgamesh was a very bad man. After his death, Gilgamesh became a respected ruler.

97
Q

OEDIPUS REX

What role does the Chorus play within Oedipus Rex and to what degree of success

A

The chorus provides atmosphere. They also provide a sense of peace and instill a sense of suspense towards the audience. They are a median between the audience and the characters. They are successful.

98
Q

OEDIPUS REX

What type of figure is Oedipus and why? What are his strengths and weaknesses

A

Oedipus is a tragic hero. He is a tragic hero because he is of noble stature and outstanding qualities, yet flawed by a major error in judgment. This error in judgment leads to the hero’s downfall.

He is a round character and dynamic. His strengths include being a man of action, he has insight, nobility, and he is brave.

99
Q

OEDIPUS REX

Where do you see Oedipus’ fate being foreshadowed and what larger commentaries are being made through forehadwing

A

Oedipus’ fate is foreshadowed in the argument between him and Teiresias when he calls him blind and in the end Oedipus becomes blind. Oedipus says that Teiresias lost his power, but in the end Oedipus was the one who lost his power and went into exile. Creon became king.

The larger commentary made through this foreshadowing is the concept of inevitability and the struggle against fate. Oedipus, despite his intelligence and determination, cannot escape the prophecy. His relentless pursuit of the truth, which is driven by a desire to save Thebes from the plague, ironically leads him to the realization of his own dreadful fate. This underscores the idea that human beings are often powerless in the face of fate, and their actions, no matter how well-intentioned, can unwittingly contribute to their downfall.

100
Q

OEDIPUS REX

Who is most at fault for the suffering of Thebes and why

A

Oedipus is most at fault for the suffering of Thebes because he kills King Lauis, which started the plague in the city.

101
Q

THE FROGS

According to The Frogs, explain the differences between the works of Aeschylus and Euripedes. Whose works are better and why

A

Euripedes argues that the characters in his plays are better because they are more true to life and logical. Whereas Aeschylus believes his characters are better because they are heroic and models for virtue. Dionysis thinks Aechlyus is better because he connects to his strong sense of belief in power of community.

102
Q

THE FROGS

Explain why Aeschylus’ advice to save the city of Athens is better than Euripides’

A

Aeschylus’ advice was more practical than Euripides’. Aeschylus’ advice was to put nobler people into office and strengthen their navy, whereas Euripides advice was to spray vinegar into the eyes of the enemies, which is not practical.

103
Q

THE FROGS

How is Dionysus redeemed as a divine figure during the Trial of Aeschylus and Euripides

A

Before the trial, Dionysus is portrayed as a fool that constantly defecates himself. But during the trial, he is fair and listens to both sides. His decision is honored and he is put into a position of power.

104
Q

THE FROGS

What purpose(s) does Xanthius serve/provide examples from the text

A

Xanthias serves as a comparision for Dionysus. Xanthias is braver than Dionysus, even though he is Dionysus’ slave.
The play opens with the two discussing what jokes Xanthius can say. Dionysus also makes Xanthias change into the Hercules outfit because he is scared.

107
Q
