what is a secular society?
religion has less influence over state government; religion changes as society develops; religion has not declined but people are becoming more honest; US is more religious than other countries bc its less hierarchical and part of political culture; american religion loves separation of church and state bc then religion is not tainted by government corruption

what are 3 political cultures in US?
moralistic (New England, government is crucial for a good society); individualistic (Midwest and MidAtlantic, society is a marketplace and government should only be involved at a minimum and only to ensure economic access); traditional (south, mixed, maintain cultural order and government should serve to maintain the preexisting elite)

english protestants, “purify” church of England, less ritual and more preaching, wanted religious liberty in the US (why pilgrims migrated on the mayflower)
