Symptoms of anemia in general

A
  • shortness of breath
  • rapid and pounding heartbeat
  • dizziness
  • fatigue
  • in mild anemia: may only see these symptoms during exercise
  • skin becomes pale or yellow depending on cause of anemia
  • impaired healing and elasticity of skin due to hypoxia
  • abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and anorexia due to decreased oxygen to GI tract
  • PICA- eating items that are not typically thought of as food, body is trying to replenish needed nutrients
