midterm 2 Flashcards
arm, hand, thorax (8 cards)
What are the 5 boarders of the axilla?
Anterior - pec major/minor
Post - Scapula and all muscles of scapula (supraspinatus to lat.dorsi)
Superior - Trapezius, clavicle, acromion
Lateral - humorous, deltoid, muscles attaching to humerus
Medial - ribs, serratus anterior
What is the inferior boarder of axilla and why is it important?
There is none, vulnerable area
What is an anastomoses?
coming together of 2 arteries
What is collateral circulation?
Gets blood places when main artery is blocked/broken
- uses anastomoses
What is the difference between a dermatomal chart and a sensory nerve chart?
Dermatomal chart - one level of nerve root innervation from spinal cord - ex. only C5 nerve root
Sensory nerve chart - can come from multiple spinal nerve roots but only one nerve, can include multiple dermatome areas
What happens if the median nerve is compromised at the elbow?
Hand of benediction
- half of flexor digitorum profundus and all of flexor digitorum superficials lose innervation
- leads to digits 1,2,3 not being able to flex when asked to make a fist
- more deficit = more severe presentation
What happens if the ulnar nerve is compromised at the wrist and at the elbow?
Ulnar claw
- at wrist, DAB’s and PAD’s and lumbricles 4,5 lose innervation which causes flexors to ‘win’, causes claw
- at elbow - flexor digitorum profundus 4,5, relaxes ulnar claw because they lose flexion, appears less severe
- more deficit = less severe presentation
