Q

Know what EXACTLY Solomon requested for from God and why that is important relative to Deuteronomy.

A

Solomon asked God for a listening heart (or an understanding mind).

This is important relative to Deuteronomy 30 because Solomon realizes that he and the people need to have circumcised hearts. Hearts after God’s heart. Only after their heart is circumcised will they turn back to God

A

Solomon is a potential new Adam – Israel is blessed with an abundance of food and there is dominion and peace, just like Adam. There is an overall connection with Eden

Davidic Covenant – Solomon has uniting power, the power of David

Abrahamic Covenant – Judah and Israel were said to be like the sand on the seashore, this was the promise made to Abraham. Also, the nations were blessing Israel, like the Queen of Sheba

Q

Know the nature of Solomon’s request in 1 Kings 8 and its connection with Deuteronomy 30

A

Solomon does not just pray for Israel, but he prays for the Gentiles because he knows that Israel is a kingdom of priests.

He also realizes that everyone sins and that is why things went so wrong and that they will eventually go into exile

He specifically requests that God would circumcise their hearts as it was said in Deut 30. This needs to be done in order for Israel to turn back to Him

Q

Know the significance of the prophet who got killed by a lion (and the whole story) in 1 Kings 13

A

A prophet of God disobeys the Word of the Lord to not stay in the place where he prophesied and not to eat or drink in that place. However, another deceives him saying that the word of the Lord has told him that the prophet should come and eat and drink there. Because of the prophet’s disobedience, a lion met him on the road and killed him.

What is ironic is that:

  1. the donkey is standing there, next to the lion and has not been killed or eaten
  2. The lion has not eaten the prophet
  3. And the lion doesn’t kill the people walking by watching this scene

This all shows the power and importance of obeying the Word of the Lord

Q

Be closely familiar with the reign of Asa and Ahab. Link this with the issues of God being the only one having stability and power.

A

Asa trusts God and stability is upheld
he tries to become friends with Syria in order to prevent/make a sandwich. He didn’t trust God and so he dies

Ahab is a new paradigm of evil. He does more evil in the sight of the Lord than anyone before him. He tries to rebuild Jericho, dismissing the curse that God pronounced on anyone who tried this. Two of his sons die, but he doesn’t care and keeps going. Under his reign is the Elijah v. followers of Baal incident on Mount Carmel, shows God sovereign power over everything. Ahab is proven to be totally helpless and God totally powerful. Ben-Hadad goes to Ahab and Ahab gives him whatever he wants. When they end up fighting, Ben-Hadad and his men are drunk, says to take them alive while fighting, instead of what a normal person would do and kill them. Makes no sense and God grants a great victory
Ahab wants a vineyard, Jezebel gets it for him, but it turns out to be more nails in his coffin.
The final showdown is between Ahab and Micaiah. There is a battle between them and Today Ahab will die – go to battle, Jehoshaphat dresses like Ahab and Ahab like a nobody. The people kill Jehoshaphat and a random guy drew his bow and not looking where he was shooting and killed Ahab between the chain link in his armor in an artery by his heart. Nothing is random, Divine execution.

Each of these instances show that God will preserve those that obey Him and instantly destroy those who disobey Him.

Raised for such a time as this, Mordecai asks her to go see the king
She hasn’t seen him in 30 days which implies that he has a new queen
If she goes in without being summoned and he doesn’t hold out the scepter, she is dead

A

God’s rightness in a world gone wrong

63
Q

read about events in ch 1-2 well

A

go rn.

64
Q

Know the names and specialties of the three major dialogue partners of Job. Understand how they argue their points in general.

A

Eliphaz – the historian (if you repent it will all work out in the end)

Bildad – the scientist (cause and effect arguments)

Zophar – the philosopher (God is so complicated that you are wrong)

65
Q

Understand how the three major debates work relative to the epistemological categories of pre-modern, modern, and post-modern

A

Job constricts their epistemology

Do they know everything happening in heaven (premodern)? No

Then do they know everything happening on earth (modern)? No

Then do they know everything happening to me (Job) (postmodern)? No

They don’t know anything

66
Q

Know the name of the other dialogue partner of Job. What was his point and how did he argue so (particularly regarding the thunderstorm)?

A

Elihu
He says that Job has become self-righteous. He also introduces God and He appears. He needs to prove that He is right on earth

67
Q

How does Job point to the gospel in his book?

A

The gospel is presented in Job’s 3 wishes

  1. About sin, and what is man that you are mindful about him.
  2. He wishes for a mediator who is both God and man. If this came true it would prove that He is a good God.
  3. He wishes that after he dies that God would hide him and raise him from the dead to be united with God

That they would love each other and have fellowship. God raised Christ and now we can have fellowship with Him

68
Q

How does God argue in His proclamation to Job? How does super-cow play into this?

A

God argues that Job knows nothing, He humbles him

He uses the super-cow and the Leviathan to prove this. Job and his friends were always comparing each other with cows and beasts, He says that if you can’t control the super cow and don’t have its power, then what makes you able to do it better than me?

And the Leviathan is Satan’s mascot, it you can’t control his mascot what makes you think you can control him?

69
Q

Does God ever answer Job’s questions?

A

He never directly answers his questions, but he fulfills his wishes and confirms that he is to trust in the almighty God who is infinitely mighty and powerful

70
Q

What is the significance of Job’s death at the end of the book?

A

Job’s death is what he wished and hoped for, he wanted his day before God in court
He also finds out that God has provided everything, his wishes were granted, and it is proved that God is right
