Responsibilities/duties/functions of SLPA in a clinical/medical setting:
- prepare charts and distribute progress notes
- organize and log incoming consultations
- do patient billing
- order supplies and equipment
- place orders for modified diets for hospital patients
Responsibilities/duties/functions of a SLPA:
- make therapy materials
- make therapy folders
- make communication board
- decorate therapy room for holidays
- collect date while SLP works with clients
Activities/duties/functions an SLPA is not allowed to do:
- conduct evaluations
- interpret data
- alter treatment plans
- participate in conferences without supervising SLP or another SLP present
- discharge clients from services
- represent him or herself as a SLP
- make referrals for additional services

Syntax, phonology, morphology, semantics and pragmatics
What is immediate supervision?
SLP supervision is physically present
What does “medically fragile” mean?
Medically unstable or acutely ill. Tells you you cannot work with this individual by yourself. Must be immediate supervision.
Name different types of work settings for a SLP:
- school
- private practice/clinic
- hospital
- skilled nursing facility
- rehab center
- home care
What is receptive disorder?
May have difficulty understanding questions, following directions, comprehending stories and understanding material presented in classroom lessons.
What is expressive disorders?
Examples would be naming pictures, describing experiences and expressing opinions.
Common causes of articulation/phonological disorders:
- hearing impairments
- emotional factors
- structural defects affecting the articulated
- developmental disabilities
Definition of caseload:
Amount of cases given in a period of time.
What does IEP stand for?
Individualized Education Plan
Problems with an adult stutterer:
General reductions in social interactive skills and specific reductions in self-esteem.
Chronological Age?
Today’s date - their birthday = CA
Year/month/day format
What’s required to be a SLPA?
AA/AS in SLPA - 100 clinical hours - fingerprints - application - transcripts - photo - $50 fee Or BA/BS in communicative disorders - 70 clinical hours
What does CSHA stand for? ASHA?
California Speech and Hearing Association, American Speech and Hearing Association
How many people can a SLP supervise?
3 in total= 2 SLPA + 1 Speech Aide
What does CCC stand for?
Certificate of Clinical Competence
ASHA code of ethics/professional development:
- individuals shall provide all services competently
- individuals shall not reveal, without authorization, any professional or personal information about the person served unless required by law
- individuals shall continue their professional development throughout their careers.
ASHA code of ethics/professional development:
- individuals shall not misrepresent their credentials, competence, education, training or experience
- individuals shall not participate in professional activities that constitute a conflict of interest.
- individuals shall prohibit anyone under supervision from engaging in any practice that violates the Code of Ethics
What is a phonological disorder?
Difficulty producing vowels of consonants of a language and combining sounds to produce words.
What is semantics disorders?
Difficulty understanding the meaning of what other people say and they do not understand how to use speech appropriately themselves. Difficulty with content of language and the meaning and use of words or sentences.
What is syntatical disorders?
Difficulty with the form of language, the order and combination of words to form sentence and the relationships among the elements within a sentence. Involves word order and how sentences are normally constructed.
