21
Q

A

Decibels and the frequency is measured in Hertz

22
Q

What are the characteristics of sound?

A

Frequency

Wavelength

Velocity

23
Q

Amplitude

A

The amplitude of a wave is the distance from the center line to the top of a crest or to the bottom of a trough

24
Q

Wavelength

A

The distance from any point on one wave to the same point on the next wave along

25
Frequency
The number of waves passing a point in a certain time
26
Speed/velocity
The speed of a wave is how far the wave travels in a certain time
27
What are the components of sound?
Pitch Quality/ Timbre Intensity/ Loudness Duration
28
5 principles of design (the “how”)
- Proportion – aka scale. Proportionate size as seen by comparing two lines, objects, or spaces - Balance – equalization of weight or opposing forces within a composition is the equal distribution of visual weight in a design - Rhythm – timed movement of the eye leads the audience from one part of a design to another part, creating movement through repetition of pattern, color, or regular arrangement of motifs - Emphasis – it marks the locations in a composition which most strongly catches the eye and makes the viewer pay attention - *Unity – a similar relationship between the meaning and function of the images
29
5 basic stage configurations :
- The Proscenium (opening serving as a frame that separates the stage from the audience) - Thrust stage (or three quarter round) -extends into the audience in three sides. Ex: Hodges theater - arena stage - playing space in the center with the audience surrounding their perimeter of the stage in a circle or square - black box- generic term for smaller sized theater often with fewer than 100 seats, walls painted black, and flexible seating - Found, environmental , or created spaces - non traditional performances spaces - theater types can have big influence on set and lighting design
30
Costume Design
- costumes depict characters - anything worn onstage is considered a costume - reveal time, period, place/locale, mood, theme, style and info about the age, notates, health of the character - Costume design expresses a certain snapshot of time, as the silhouette, shape, texture, and accessories can all get very period specific (therefore you need to know when you're working in a specific period)
31
Pitch
Determined by the frequency of the sound
32
Quality/Timbre
Combination of fundamental frequency
33
Intensity/Loudness
Loudness of sound depends on intensity of sound stimulus
34
Duration
How long sound lasts from beginning to end
35
ADSR envelope
Component of many synthesizers, samplers, and other electronic musical instruments Attack Design Sustain Release
36
What is noise?
Irregular and disordered vibrations
37
Sample size or Bitrate
Specifies number of bits per second that are used to encode audio
