Midterm Feb Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the function of the upper epidermis?
It protects the leaf, is transparent for light penetration, and may contain some stomata and guard cells.
What is the main site of photosynthesis?
The palisade layer, as it contains many chloroplasts.
What is the function of the spongy layer?
Gas exchange and some photosynthesis; has air spaces for movement of gases.
What does the xylem transport?
Water and minerals.
What does the phloem transport?
Dissolved sugars (products of photosynthesis).
What do guard cells do?
Control the opening and closing of stomata for gas exchange.
What do stomata do?
Allow gases (CO₂, O₂) and water vapor to enter and exit the leaf.
What happens in the starch test?
Iodine turns blue-black if starch is present.
What is the equation for photosynthesis?
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
How do enzymes affect photosynthesis?
They speed up reactions but can be denatured by high temperatures.
