Diglossia
Situations where a number (3+) of distinct codes are used for clearly distinct purposes or in clearly distinguishable situations.
Polyglossia
Very short switches that are made primarily for social reasons- to signal and actively construct one’s ethnic identity and solidarity with the addressee. Usually at the beginning or the end of an utterance.
Tag Switching/ Emblematic Switching
Code-Switching for reasons which can clearly be identified.
Situational Switching
Code-switching for rhetorical reasons. This sort of switch isn’t influenced by observable external factors.
Metaphorical-Switching (Can also be referred to as Code-Mixing)
Code switching that happens rapidly and naturally.
Fuselect
Switches triggered by a lack of vocabulary.
Lexical Borrowing
This theory claims that you may only switch between an adj and noun if both languages use the same order for their syntax.
The Equivalence Constraint
What is the Matrix Language Frame?
This theory claims that there is a Matrix Language which provides the grammatical frame for the switch, while the embedded language only integrates content words into the provided frame.
