- Problems in fishing - In the early 20th century. The fishing industries experienced a depression and people were forced to move for a better job.
- The Potato Famine - Potato crops became infected and failed, most of the population relied on Potatoes and this forced people to move away.
- The clearance - Landlords would force tenants out and replace them with farm animals to make a profit.

- Improvements in transport - Sailing ship was main form of transport, travel time was reduced and the cost also decreased which made it affordable to travel.
- Job Opportunities - Jobs overseas offered more money for the same jobs and there were many available jobs in various sections.
- Assisted Passage - Many companies would give Scots the money they needed to travel over to a different country and start their new job and a new career opportunity.
