MIGRATION AND RELIGIOUS PLURALISM: How Christian denominations view each other Flashcards
(9 cards)
Today, what are the broad divisions of Christianity?
Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Protestant
Reasons for divisions within Christianity: issues of authority
Should scripture be the source of authority? Should there be religious leaders?
Reasons for divisions within Christianity: traditions
Baptist movement emphasises adult baptism whereas Catholic Churches believe in the sacramental baptism of infants
Reasons for divisions within Christianity: interpretation
Some denominations focus on a literal reading of scripture, others as the product of fallible, inspired human writers
How Christian denominations view each other: The Roman Catholic Church
Continuity with the Faith as taught by the apostles e.g. apostolic succession, using same rituals from early Church - baptism and holy communion
If the Church is the body of Christ, a single spiritual entity, there is no room for division
Liberal catholics: closed inclusivist
Quote for Roman Catholic view of other Christian denominations
Non Catholics are ‘separated brethren’- Pope John Paul II
How Christian denominations view each other: Protestant evangelical Churches
Luther taught salvation is by grace (sola gratia) through faith (sola fides), so Christians are judged by PECs by how they apply principles from the NT
PECs prefer to be self governing communities- based on NT example of the Early Church in the book of Acts. So see hierarchical structures as unbiblical
Exclusivist approach- must commit to Christ
How Christian denominations view each other: The Church of England
Recognises other Churches as different in matters of worship
General admission that no Church is perfect- willing to work with other Churches e.g. agreements like the ARCIC

Describes initiatives to promote Christian unity
The Ecumenical Movement originated in the early 20th century
Suggests Christian denominations can work together
The World Council of Churches
