government changes - greater freedoms encouraged a lot of migration
industrialisation - growing towns attracted migrants with job opportunities

English were worried migrants would take jobs, migrants cultures seemed suspicious, a lot of prejudice to certain migrants
explain the changes to the British Empire
growth of the British Empire meant that contact with the world so more migration, Britain took control of India, huge source of food and raw materials
reasons for Irish migration
poverty, starvation in Catholic community, barely any jobs, food prices rose
reasons for Jewish migration
fleeing persecution in Russian Empire, situation of existing Jews in Britain improved so it was attractive to them - existing Jews feared for their acceptance
reasons for African migration
slave trade forced many Africans to work as enslaved people, British merchants had huge wealth
reasons for Asian migration
for education opportunities, East India Company forced Indian princes out their land, Indian servants migrated with their colonial families, lascars recruited by the EIC

greater freedom, British economic strength and freedom from government, avoid warfare between German states
reasons for Italian migration
avoid warfare between Italian states, changes in agriculture left many in poverty, severe outbreaks of diseases
experiences of Irish migrants
most were poor tenant farmers that took on hard labouring work in docks, worked as navvies digging out canals and building railways, faced a lot of prejudice

very overcrowded and they didn’t speak English, those working in sweatshops had terrible conditions for very low pay and faced a lot of prejudice
experiences of African migrants
legal status wasn’t clear, some couldn’t find work in Britain ‘Committee for the Relief of the Black Poor’ set up to help them, some were very successful in work
experiences of Asian migrants
some Ayah’s were left stranded, some English women set up a hostel for abandoned ayahs, many lascars found work in ports, others suffered poverty, hostels opened to help them
experiences of German migrants
hundreds set up small businesses e.g. butchers, bakers, and brewers
experiences of Italian migrants
they brought fun to England, many worked as street musicians, others did hard manual work and they sold ice cream
