Milgram's obedience study and situational variables Flashcards
(30 cards)
What was the aim of the study?
To answer any the German population followed Hitler’s orders
Whomwere the participants ?
40 males aged 20-50 years old found through advatisinf for participants for a study in memory
What was the maximum and minimum shock?
15 volts and 450 volts
What happened at 300 and 315 volts
The learned pounded on the walls demanding to be let out
What happened after 315 volts
The learner stayed silent
How many prods were there?
4
What voltage did no participants stop bellow?
300 volts
How many participants continued to the highest level?
65%
What did qaulatative data reveal?
Then participants displayed anxiety and 3 reportedly had seizures
Why did Orne and Holland and Perry argue the experiment had low internal validity?
The participants teased the set up and were doubtful the shocks were real
Why does Milgram argue the experiment has internal validity
As 70% of participants reported believing the shocks were genuine
What experiment did Sheridan and King do that supports Milgram’s findings?
ppts were asked to give electric shocks to a puppy and 54% of male and 100% of female ppts delivered ‘lethal voltage’
What investigation did Holfing et al do supporting Milgram’s findings?
in hospital nurses were asked to administrated a drug over the phone by a unknown doctor and 21 out of 22 nurses obeyed
Why did the experiment have high internal validity?
the lab was representative of real life relationships between us and authority
can we genralise Milgram’s finding?
no as he only used men
yes as he used a very large sample
What supporting replications have there been?
bbc study 75% obeyed and french tv show 80% of ppts gave electric shock to a unconscious man
What alternative explanation is there for Milgram’s findings?
social identification theory- when ppts rebelled they identified more with the victim but when they obeyed they identified more with the science
What ethical issues are there?
deception but given debrief and 84% said they were pleased they took part
How does Rank and Jacobs research conflict with Holfing et al’s?
when nurses were allowed to discuss and were familiar with the drug and doctor only 2 out of 18 obeyed
what happened when the experiment was conducted in a run down building?
obedience dropped to 47.5%
what happened when the experiment was conducted with the learner and teacher in the same room?
obedience dropped to 40%
what happened when some one else administered the shocks?
obedience rose to 92.5%
what happened when the teacher had to force the learners hand onto a electric shock plate?
obedience dropped to 30%
what happened when the instructions were given by phone?
obedience dropped to 20.5%
