Why is breast milk better?
Well tolerated Less allergenic Low renal load Improves cognitive development Reduces infection
What are the benefits of formula milk compared to breast?
No transmission of BBV's Doesn't need mum Accurate feed volumes Provides vit K Less jaundice
What is the pain problem with formula milk?
As it is cow milk based, there is no iron so children become anaemic
What are specialised formula milk?
For cows milk protein allergy (hydrolysed protein feeds or AA based)
Pre-term formulae
Nutrient dense
Disease specific (lactose free or soya milks)
What is weaning?
Transition from milk to a mixed diet
When does weaning start?
5-6 months
