Mindfulness AO3 Flashcards
(4 cards)
EFFECTIVNESS FOR
P – One strength of mindfulness as a therapy is that there is evidence to support it’s use as a therapy for depression.
E – Crane et al (2014) found that for people who have experienced three or more previous episodes of depression, MBCT reduces the recurrence rate over 12 months by 40–50% compared with usual care
E – Based on this fact, the NICE have recommended that MBCT can be used in cases of three or more episodes of depression
L – This is a strength because it shows that mindfulness in combination with cognitive therapy can be successful in the treatment of MH disorders
EFFECTIVENESS AGAINST
Does not get to the root cause of the disorder
An individual is taught to accept their thoughts without judgement. However, this does nothing to address the issues that caused the thoughts.
However, despite being useful in wider settings such as schools the lack of scientific evidence means that the overall validity of the therapy and its underpinning concepts are limited. Furthermore, since the therapy is not suitable for treating PTSD, schizophrenia and disorders related to earlier experiences it is less effective than more established therapies that are designed to repair faulty thoughts rather than enhance the well-being of individuals.
ETHICS FOR
Generally, mindfulness has been seen to be highly ethical. As a therapy, it has few side and takes a highly positive attitude towards individual wellbeing. It promotes free will, empowering people to make changes in their own lives
Compared to psychoanalysis, mindfulness does not require reliving past trauma
Compared to CBT, mindfulness does not place blame onto the client
Compared to psychosurgery and drug therapy, there are no serious side effects that would have an impact on the progress of the therapy
ETHICAL AGAINST
Mindfulness training may be delivered by untrained practitioners
Dr Ruth (2014) claimed they are powerful interventions with much enthusiasm within schools and corporations. However as they are delivered to vulnerable and so needs to be delivered by specialists
