Minerals Flashcards
(28 cards)
How much minerals are needed for major and minor minerals?
100 mg/day ><
What are the
Name all the major minerals?
- Calcium
- Phosphorus
- Magnesium
Name all the minor/trace minerals?
- Fluoride
- Iron
- Zinc
- Iodine
- Copper
What % of the Ca does bone contain and plasma?
99% and 1%
Function of calcium?
- Bones and teeth formation
- Muscle contraction
- blood clotting
- Nerve Impulse conduction
Sources of Ca?
- dairy
- green leafy vegetables
- sardines
- fortified orange juices
How can Ca be lost in our body?
- Urinating
- diarrhea
- sweating/vomiting
- blood loss
What are the 2 major types of bone cells?
- osteoblast - makes bone building cells
- osteoclasts - uses the Ca from the bones. Demineralizing cells.
how are osteoblasts stimulated?
- growth hormones
- Testosterone
- estrogen - during menopause estrogens go down and thus more women are prone to weaker bones.
- weight bearing exercise
how are osteoclats stimulated?
- PTH- Parathyroid hormone
What are the 2 problems caused by a lack of Ca?
- Fractures
- kyphosis
how to prevent Ca lack?
- ample vitamin D
- Ample calcium
- no smoking/ drinking
- Hormone replacement therapy
what does hypercalcemia cause?
- Kidney failure
- kidney stones
What are the functions of phosphorus?
- Bones
- DNA synthesis
- ATP production
sources of phosphorus?
- animal and plant protein
Functions of Magnesium?
- Bone formation (like tar on the road)
- cofactor in 300 enzymes
- Production of ATP and DNA synthesis.
sources - seeds, nuts, spinach
what can hypermagnesia cause?
- impaired heart and nerve function.
What are the function of Iron?
- Hemoglobin - pigment in rbc, transport oxygen and carbon dioxide
- Myoglobin - stores oxygen in muscles and releases when needed.
- ATP cofactor - ATP production
Sources of Iron?
- red meat - best absorption (heme- iron)
- water pipes - iron pipes
- Iron skillet
- Lentils, spinach, Tomato puree
How is iron absorbed? 3 ways
- stomach acidity, the higher the acidity, the higher the absorption
- Heme iron vs non heme iron.
What happens when you have a iron deficiency anemia?
- reduced hemoglobin synthesis, oxygen level drops, reduced ATP.
- immunity drops, pale, light headed, and tired
what can the overconsumption of iron do?
- iron toxicity
- naseau, vomiting, and heart and brain damage. Even death!
what are the functions of zinc?
- antioxidants
- synthesis of hemoglobin
- immune function
