Keep an eye out for yellow jackets that live under ground. If you find a nest stay far away. Don’t try to kill them.

Q

Clay

A

If you find clay, it is an excellent material. Use it to make bowls, cups, plates and other tools.

Try putting it on your skin to keep insects away.

A thin layer of clay can keep your skin from being sunburned.

Q

Making Charcoal

A

Put soft, wooden materials into a metal tin, close it up (you might have to use a metal wire) and place it in the fire. When it’s done smoking take it out without burning yourself. Let it cool down. If the fire was hot enough and the tin was allowed to sit long enough you should have charcoal inside, which has many uses.

Uses:
Charcloth ignites easily
Charcoal burns hotter than normal wood and without smoke
Settles an upset stomach if you eat a little bit
Blacken under your eyes to help you see by reducing glare
Write with it
Grind it up and add to melted resin to create “pitch” (a type of glue)
