Mitosis Flashcards
(9 cards)
Stages
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase
Definition
The process in which an existing cell divides into two identical daughter cells each with 23 pairs of chromosomes
Function
Growth, repair, asexual production (eukaryotes)
Interphase
Chromosomes are singles stranded threads
Centrioles divide and move apart
Prophase
Chromosomes become short and thick
Chromosomes are double-stranded
Centrioles move to opposite ends of cell
Metaphase
Nuclear membrane dissapears
Spindles grow from centrioles and attach to chromosomes
Chromosomes line up at the Equator of cell
Anaphase
Spindles pull the doubled stranded chromosomes apart
Double-stranded chromosomes split in half and move to opposite ends of cells
Telophase
Chromosomes lengthen
New nuclear membranes form around two daughter nuclei
Cytokinesis occurs and results in two daughter cells
Binary fission
Mitosis for asexual reproduction
