Mitosis Flashcards
(13 cards)
Where is mitosis present?
Asexual reproducing organisms.
What is the nature of the cells produced by mitosis?
2 identical cells that are diploid (have a full set of DNA)
What are the phases of mitosis?
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase
What is Chromatin?
Complex long threads of DNA and protein that makes up chromosomes
What is an un-condensed chromosome?
Long, thing strands not visible with light microscope
What is a condensed chromosome?
Short and visible (X shape)
What is the difference between a chromosome and a chromatid?
Chromosomes replicate before cell division to form 2 matched sister chromatids (U shape)
Describe what occurs in Early Prophase.
Chromatin condenses to chromosomes, centrioles move to poles of nucleus which attach to spindle fibres.
Describe Late Prophase.
Spindle fibres attach to centromere of chromosomes, nuclear membrane starts to dissolve
What occurs in Metaphase?
Chromosomes line up on the equatorial plate (centre of nucleus) in single file.
Describe what occurs in Anaphase.
Spindle fibres contract and pulled apart chromosomes into chromatids to opposites sides of the cell
What consists of the first part of Telophase?
Chromosomes reach the centrioles at each pole and begin to unravel back into chromatin, nucleus begins to reform.
What occurs in the last stage of Teolphase, Cytokinesis?
Splitting of the cytoplasm, leaving you with 2 identical cells with equal amount of DNA
