Q

What is meisosis?

A

Meiosis is similar to mitosis, however it is the process in which sex cells duplicate and they go through PMAT Twice.

Q

How do chromosomes line up in meiosis?

A

So basically, in prophase 1, the homologous chromosomes are already close to their respective homologous chromosomes, and form a tetrad. They pair up and become very close which is a process called synapsis and exchange genetic information(crossing over). In metaphase is when all the tetrads come together in the middle

Q

Genetic variation in cells? What are the two ways and explain them briefly.

A

The two are crossing over. and independent assortment. Crossing over occurs in prophase one due to a process called synapsis. This is when genetic material from either parent is exchanged. The point in which they excahnge is called chiasma. independent assortment occurs in metaphase one and is when the position of the homologous chromosomes are different. there can be many different combinations in which they align. This ensures that there is genetic diversity

Q

What is non disjunction error

A

Homologous chromosomes fail to separate in anaphae one, and sister chromatids fail to separate in anaphase 2. This results in gametes that have either too many chromosomes or too few.
