mitosis Flashcards
(11 cards)
what cells does mitosis affect?
Somatic cells
what happens when parent cells are copied?
they make two genetically identical daughter cells
whats the result of mitosis?
genetically identical daughter cells
what are the three reasons cell replication occurs?
- growth
2.repair - procreation
what are the 4 stages of mitosis?
- prophase
- metaphase
- anaphase
- telophase
(PMAT)
what happens during interphase (before mitosis)
DNA in the cell doubles from 46 to 92
what happens during prophase
. chromosomes become visible
. centrioles move to the poles of the cell, and start to create spindle fibres
(p for prohase, when moving to opposite poles)
what happens during metaphase
. spindle fibres connect to chromatids
. chromatids move to the middle of the cell
. nuclear membrane disappears
(m for metaphase, when chromatids move to the middle)
what happens during anaphase
. chromosomes divide, separating sister chromatids
. spindle fibres shorten, pull chromosomes away from the middle of cell
(a for anaphase, when chromsomes are pulled away)
what happens during telophase
. new nuclei form around chromosomes making two new nuclei
. spindle fibres disappear
what happens during cytokinesis (after mitosis)
the cell separates into two daughter cells
