Mitosis Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is mitosis?
Mitosis is a process by which the cell divides into two identical copies of the original cell
Who does mitosis?
All humans and animals
Why does mitosis occur?
For growth and repair of cells or asexual production
Where does mitosis occur?
Somatic Cells = Everywhere
When does mitosis occur?
Whenever more cells are needed / for growth and repair of cells
How many chromosomes…
46 (diploid cells / 2n)
How does mitosis occur?
Mitosis I
Give 6 processes of mitosis
1) Interphase – DNA replicates to create two pairs of homologous chromosomes with two chromatids
2) Prophase – Chromosomes condense and nuclear membrane breaks down
3) Prometaphase – Kinetochores appear and mitotic spindle microtubles attach to them
4) Metaphase – Chromosomes line up at the metaphase plate and a spindle forms attaching to centromeres
5) Anaphase – Chromatids are separated and pulled apart to opposite poles of the cell
6) Telophase & Cytokinesis – Chromosomes decondense, nuclei reform and the cell divides into two, forming two daughter cells with the same number of chromosomes as the parent nucleus
