MITOSIS Flashcards
Cell Theory
- All living things are made up of one or more cells
- Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things
- New cells are produced from existing cells
Cell Division
the process that a cell divides into two new daughter cells
Mitosis
division of the cell nucleus
Cytokinesis
Division of the cell cytoplasm
Why do cells have to divide?
- DNA Overload
2. Harder to move nutrients and waste across the cell membrane with out it
Why do cells divide?
Growth and development
Reproduction
Repair
Chromatin
the mass of DNA and protein that makes up a Chromosome
Chromosome
highly coiled mass of DNA and protein
Centromere
point where two chromatids connect
Chromatid
one of the two identical strands of DNA that make up a a chromosome
6 stages of mitosis in order
Interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, cytokinesis
Interphase
“Resting phase”: Cells are
getting ready to divide
G1 phase: cells grow
S phase: chromosomes replicated and DNA molecules synthesized
G2 phase: produces organelles needed for cell division
If a cell fails checkpoints, cell will go through apoptosis
apoptosis:
programmed cell death
Prophase
Chromosomes become visible, spindle forms as centrioles move
Nucleus disappears
Metaphase
Chromosomes line up around equator
Spindle Fibers connect to centromeres
