Mitosis Vocab Flashcards
(9 cards)
Chromosome
A condensed package of DNA and proteins
- found in the nucleas
- the x shape thing
Chromatid
Half of one replicated chromosome
- when a chromosome is copied during S phase, you get two sister chromatids
Chromatin
Uncondensed “stringy” form of DNA
- organized by histone proteins
Centromere
The region where two sister chromatids are attached.
After S phase of the cell cycle, each new sister chromatid is attached at the centromere
Kinetochore
A protein complex located in the centromere region (those circular proteins where the x meets)
- the site where spindle fibers attach during mitosis
Centrosome
Organelle in the cell responsible for orchestrating mitosis
Contains two centrioles
The mitotic spindle forms between the two centrosomes
Gets copied during interphase ( so that there are two centrosomes)
Centriole
A bundle of microtubules which are involved in organizing the spindle fibers during mitosis
Each centrosome contains a pair of centrioles
Centrioles move the opposite poles of the cell during mitosis
Cytokinesis
Division of a cell’s cytoplasm
After mitosis, cytokinesis must occur in order for the entire cell to be split in two.
Occurs differently in plants and animals.
Mitotic Spindle/Spindle Fiber
– Protein fibers that move chromosomes.
