Mix and flow of matter Flashcards
(49 cards)
What does WHMIS stand for?
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
What is a fluid?
Anything that does not have a fixed shape and can flow, it can be a liquid or a gas.
What is a slurry? What are three examples?
A slurry is a mixture of water or a liquid and a solid. Slushy, mud, cake batter, oil sands, diarea ext.
What is a hydrometer?
A device used to measure the density of a liquid.
When a mixture is saturated it means that…
No more solute can be dissolved
What is a heterogenious mixture?
What are some examples?
It is a mechanical mixture in which you can see the seperate pieces or particles this also means that you will not get the exact same thing in every bite or scoop.
(examples: Soil, fruit salad, blood, concrete)
What are elements?
What are examples?
They are a type of pure substance that are made of strictly one of the pure particles like those on the periodic table. (Examples: Gold, iron, oxygen, carbon dioxide)
What is a compound?
What are examples?
They are still one pure substance but are made of more than one element on the periodic table.
(Examples:Water, sugar, salt, air)
What is a the difference between a saturated and non-saturated mixture?
Once a mixture is saturated and no more solute can be added in a non-saturated mixture you could change the temperature and more could be added and dissolved but if a mixture is a satured mixture then even if the temperature is changed no more solute could be added.
A concentraited solution in one in which…
There is more solute that solvent and it is stronger or more flavourful and in some cases has a thicker consistancy. Not very much more solute can be added. nw
What is viscosity?
It is the rate at which a fluid flows or the measure of the resistance of a fluid flow.
What are the four proporties of a liquid?
Viscosity, boyancy, compressability and density
What is density?
The amount of matter in a given volume.
A mechanical mixture is one in which…
You can visibly see the seperate particles or ingredients
Examples:Salad, chocolate chip cookies, fruit sald, cereal
What is the universal sovlent?
Water
What is boyancy?
They upward force on an object reducing the force of gravity. The object or fluid that is boyant has to be less dense than what it is sitting in/on.
What ingrediant in toothpaste is used to keep the mixture held together?
Binders such as wood pulp or red sea weed
What is a solute and what is a solvent?
The solute is whst you add to the solvent and it is what is being dissolved.(ex. Juice powder)
The solvent in what the solute is being added to or what is dissolving it.(ex. Water)
A diluted solution is one in which…
Has more solvent that solute so it would be weaker or not as flavourful. Lots of more solute can be added and it is liquidy or thin.
What is concentraition?
The measure of how much of a given substance is mixed with another substance.(Ex.75g of sugare per 100mL of water)
What is a colloid mixture?
A mixture in which the particles never settle down to the bottom.(Ex. milk) (Not orange juice because the pulp sinks and settles)
A homogonous mixture is one in which…
It is a solution in which particles of different substances are intermingled an all of the particles in the mixture completely disapear or dissolve. It apears to be one substance and you can not see the seperate pieces.
(Ex.Vinegar, water, air)
What is the difference bettween a mixture and a solution?
A mixture is made of two or more substances
(Ex. Salad)
A solution is a type of mixture that is seperated evenly and you get the same thing in every bite/scoop
(Ex.Milk, water, juice)
What is a pneumatic system?(gas)
Systems that use gas or air under pressure to move loads.(Ex. Jackhammer, Air brakes and dentist drill)
