Mixing And Separating Flashcards
(18 cards)
What is a mixture?
A combination made up of 2 or more different substances that aren’t chemically combined and can be separated by physical methods
What is a solute?
A substance dissolved in another substance (the solvent) to form a solution
What is a solvent?
The liquid in which a solute is dissolved in to form a solution
What is a solution?
A mixture created when a solute dissolves in a solvent
What is filtration?
The process of passing a liquid through a filter in order to separate the insouble parts
What does it mean when a solution is dilute?
It’s solution made up of only a small amount of solute and/or large volume of solvent
What does it mean when a solution is concentrated?
A solution made up of a large amount of solute and/or small volume of solvent
What is chromatography?
A process by which a chemical mixture carried by a liquid or gas is separated into its components due to different rates of movement. The rate of movement is dependent on the solubility of the components in the chemical mixture.
What does it mean if a substance is soluble?
It means the substance is capable of being dissolved in a given solvent
What does it mean if a substance is insoluble?
It means the substance cannot be dissolved in a given solvent
What is condensation?
It’s the change in state from gas to liquid
What is an element?
A substance made up of only 1 type of atom
What is a compound?
A substance made up of more than 1 type of atom chemically bound together
What is a filtrate?
The liquid which has passed through a filter
What is the technique evaporation?
It’s a technique used to recover a solid dissolved in a liquid
What is distillation?
The process of separating components of a mixture based on different boiling points. The substance with the lowest boiling point is then evaporated and then condensed back to a liquid
What does it mean if a solution is saturated?
It means the solution has reached the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in the solvent
What does it mean if a solution is supersaturated?
It means the solute in the solution has exceeded the maximum amount it can be dissolved in the solvent and it’s causing the solute to form tiny solute crystals
