Q

How does Gravity separation work?

A

Decantation: Decanting is the process in which you pour out only the liquid of a liquid and solid mixture. Youd pour it out after the solid has sunk to the bottom as sediment.

Q

How does Sieving work?

A

Sieving is the process of putting a mixture through a sieve. A seive is a bowl with holes in it, speparating small substances (the ones that pass through the holes) from big ones (the ones that don’t pass through).

Q

How does centrifuging work?

A

A centrifuge is a machine that separates the contents of a sample based on their density.

It does this by rotating at rapid speeds, creating a strong centrifugal force.

This force causes the heavier particles to move away from the center of the centrifuge, while the lighter particles stay closer to the center.

This process is faster and more efficient than natural sedimentation.

Q

How does chromatography work?

A

Chromatography is the process of separating different substances from a mixture using chromatography paper.

Can separate multiple things such as dyes, inks or pigments in plants.

The paper is dipped in water at the tip and the ink, (etc.) runs up the paper with the water, separating into different coloured inks (etc.)
