Mixtures And Separation Flashcards
(15 cards)
The liquid in which the solute dissolves
Solvent
The substance that has dissolved in the liquid
Solute
What is the definition of saturated
A solution which containsso much dissolved solute that no more can dissolve in it
Describes a substance that can dissolve in a liquid
Soluble
Insoluble
Describes a substance that cannot be dissolved in a liquid
What is a solution
A solution is when a substance has dissolved in a liquid to make a transparent mixture
What are the 3 different mixtures
Colloid
Suspension
Solution
What is a suspension
A suspension is a mixture of two substances which will separate if the mixture is not stirred
What is a colloid?
A colloid is a mixture where one substance is dispersed in another and will not separate easily
What is a solution?
A solution is a mixture where a solid dissolves in a liquid
What are 4 ways of separation?
Chromatography, filtration, evaporation, distillation
What is chromatography?
Chromatography is a separation technique which uses chromatography paper to absorb the water and carry the different colours of ink found in a colour ans separate them
What is filtration?
Filtration is a separation technique where it separated the insoluble solids from the liquid
What is evaporation?
Evaporation is a separating technique where a source of heat is placed below a suspension and it turns the liquid to gas and leaves behind the insoluble solid.
What is distillation?
Distillation is a separating technique where you purify a liquid by evaporating it and condensing it
