Osteoarthritis
- non inflammatory disorder
- characterized by breakdown of cartilage
- effects most weight baring joints
Primary
no known cause, localized vs general
Secondary
identifiable cause or predisposition
Joint Creptius
crackles in joint movement
Joint Pain
worsens with activity and changes in weather
Cartilage
effected with osteoarthritis NEVER grows back, just wears away
MRI, Bone Scan, CT
more detail, degree and shows more soft tissue
ESR
overall inflammation on entire body
Management
NO CURE, only control of pain and inflammation
Management: Non Invasive
- heat for stiffness
- ice for acute exacerbation
Mild to Moderate Pain Meds
NSAIDs, topical creams/gels
Moderate to Severe Pain Meds
NSAIDs, salicylates, corticosteroids, opioid analgesics (very severe pain)
Joint Athroplasty
reconstruction, or joint replacement
Joint Resurfacing
smoothing out bone spurs
Joint Irrigation
cleaning out joint
Cemented
bonds bone to bone, less active adults
Cementless
long term stability, allows new growth of tissue, for patients with high activity level
Continuous Passive Motion Machine (CPM)
prevents scar tissue, range and per min ordered by surgeon, if positioned incorrectly can cause damage
