45
aortic regurgitation murmur type
early diastolic and austin flint murmur ## Footnote Combined pressure and volume overload in left ventricle. Compensatory mechanisms: left ventricle dilation, left ventricle hypertrophy. Progressive dilation leads to heart failure.
46
mitral stenosis murmur type
diastolic murmur ## Footnote Increased trans-mitral pressures leads to left atrial enlargement and atrial fibrillation. Left atrial dilation causes pulmonary congestion (reduced emptying) and progressive dyspnoea. Pulmonary hypertension causes right heart failure symptoms. Pulmonary hypertension causes rupture of bronchial vessels leading to haemoptysis.
47
mitral regurgitation murmur type
pansystolic murmur ## Footnote Left ventricular volume overload. Compensatory mechanisms: left atrial enlargement, left ventricular hypertrophy, and increased contractility. Progressive left atrial dilation and right ventricle dysfunction due to pulmonary hypertension. Progressive left ventricle volume overload leads to dilation and heart failure.
48
aortic stenosis murmur type
ejection systolic murmur ## Footnote Aortic orifice is restricted so a pressure gradient develops between the LV and the aorta (increased afterload). Left ventricle function is initially maintained by compensatory hypertrophy. Over time this becomes exhausted, left ventricle function declines.
49
mitral valve prolapse murmur type
late systolic murmur ## Footnote a type of heart valve disease in which the flaps (also called leaflets or cusps) of the mitral valve become enlarged or stretched
