Fast acting infection of the gums caused by abnormal overgrowth of the normal bacteria that live in the mouth
It can be caused by severe viral infection or immunosuppression, risks include malnourishment, stress, alcohol abuse, smoking, poor OH
Lifestyle modification required to treat
Treatment for acute necrotising gingivitis
Try to identify underlying risk factors
OHI
Removal of supragingival plaque/calculus
0.2% CHX / 6% hydrogen peroxide MW prescription
Antibiotics if systemic involvement such as pyrexia or lymphadenopathy
Follow up in 3-5 days
Appropriate antibiotic prescription for acute necrotising gingivitis with systemic involvement
Metronidazole 400mg 3x daily 3 days
(if unsuitable, amoxicillin 500mg 3x daily 3 days)
