(10 cards)
What is a biome ?
A biome is a large scale, global ecosystem with distinctive vegetation.
What is an ecosystem ?
An ecosystem includes all the living and non-living things in an area.
What is the biosphere ?
The biosphere includes all parts of the earth that are occupied by living organisms.
What does renewable mean ?
An energy source is renewable if it can be replenished on a very short timescale
What does non-renewable mean ?
Non-renewable energy sources can’t be replenished quickly - they take millions of years to form.
Downsides of wind energy
They take up lots of space, constant humming noise, the spinning blades can birds and bats.
Downsides of solar energy
Some solar farms use ground and surface water to clean their solar panels (can lead to water shortages), heat reflected from mirrors in solar farms can kill wildlife e.g. birds,
Solar panels built on the ground can disturb and damage habitats.
Downsides of Hydroelectric power
Dams trap water creating a reservoir which flood large areas of land, a build up of sediment can block sunlight, causing plants and algae in the river to die.
What is energy conservation ?
Conserving energy is about changing our behaviour as consumers e.g. driving less, drying clothes on a washing line instead of a dryer.
What is energy efficiency ?
If something is energy-efficient, it does the same job but using less energy e.g. a low-energy lightbulb.
