MOd 4 Flashcards
(8 cards)
any sudden shaking of the ground caused
by the passage of seismic waves through Earth’s rocks
Earthquake
when two
plates are spreading
apart, as at seafloor
ridges or continental
rift zones such as
the East Africa Rift.
Molten rock rises
from the Earth’s
center to fill the gap.
DIVERGENT BOUNDARY
occurs
when two tectonic
plates push together.
When an ocean plate
and a continental
plate collide, the
ocean plate slides
under the continental
plate, and bends
downward.
CONVERGENT BOUNDARY
slip-sliding plates, such as
California’s San Andreas
fault
TRANSFORM BOUNDARY
If an earthquake generates a large enough shaking
intensity, structures like buildings, bridges and dams
can be severely damaged, and cliffs and sloping ground
destabilized
Ground Shaking
are long wavelength oceanic
waves generated by the sudden displacement
of seawater by a shallow earthquake,
volcanic eruption or submarine landslide.
Tsunamis
occurs where sloping ground starts
to move downhill, causing cracks to open-up, that are
often seen along hill crests and riverbanks
- Lateral spreading
occurs when waterlogged sediments
are agitated by seismic shaking
liquification
