Cannula Shear

•The person actually cannulating the patient must observe the correct technique

•In the event of suspected cannula shear and plastic embolism treat the patients signs & symptoms

–Oxygen therapy

–Patient positioning – left side

–Resuscitate if necessary

–Call for back-up

–Monitor cardiac rhythm and other vital signs and respond to changes

6

Tissuing

•If the cannula is not sited correctly, the person performing the cannulating should remove it and deal with it

•In the event that they do not the cannula should be removed and the site treated as any other wound

•Aseptic technique should be used to stop any bleeding and apply the correct size of dressing.

7

Dislodged Cannula

•If a cannula becomes dislodged e.g. while a patient is moved the fluid running should immediately be turned off (if it is not already off)

•Apply pressure to stop bleeding if necessary (i.e. if bleeding is profuse)

•Use aseptic technique and treat as any other wound i.e. apply correct size sterile dressing

8

Commonly used Fluids

•Glucose

•0.9% Sodium Chloride

9

Fluids what to check

•Store in-line with manufacturers instructions

–Avoid extremes of temp

–Avoid puncture of the bag

•Check

–Expiry date

–Clarity

–Package integrity

Infusion set what to check

•Sheathed plastic needle

•Chambers (1 or 2)

•Variable compression clip

•Luer connector

•Check

–Exp date

Package integrity

Preparing of iv line

•Remove giving set from package

•Remove protective sheath and insert firmly into entry port of fluid container

•Half fill the chambers of the giving set

•Slowly open flow regulator – remove air

•Close flow regulator

•Once prepared hand the giving set to the requesting clinician for them to attach it to the cannula

•Secure the giving set with tape/bandage to the patients arm

Aseptic Technique

•Remember the importance of maintaining aseptic technique at all times when dealing with invasive procedures and equipment
