A
Volere, potere, dovere and the verb sapere.

Why are the verbs volere, dovere and potere called modal?
A
Because they are normally followed by an infinitive (Voglio mangiare un po’).

What is the difference in meaning between sapere and potere?
A
Sapere means: to have the ability to do something (I know how to bike).
Potere means: to have the physical ability to do something or to have permisson to do something. (I cannot bike today).
