model of cells Flashcards
(29 cards)
Cell theory includes
-all oragnism are made of one or more cells
-The cell is the basic unit of structure and oraganisation in organism
- All cells come from pre-existing cells that have multiplied.
What are cells
They are the basic unit of life (since they are the simplest units which make up living organism)
Looking at cells
-Human eyes cannot see most cells
-hand lens magnifies 10 times(seen as dots)
-light microscope magnifies 1500(some structures of cell seen)
- Electron microscope can magnify many times more(details seen)
name the components of animal cells
nucleus
cytoplasm
mitochondrion
vacuole
cell surface membrane
Name the components of plant cells
nucleus
cell surface membrane
cytoplasm
vacuole
mitochondrion
cell wall
chloroplast
cells that are diff
red blood cells do not have nucleus
root hair cell do not have chloroplast
cells with diff shapes, e.g. neutron, stomata
chracteristics of cell surface membrane
-thin outer layer surrounding cell
-partially or selectively permeable(allow selected substance)
- thin layer of fats and proteins
Function of cell surface membrane
controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell
Characteristics of cytoplasm
-mostly water with different type of substances such as proteins, carbohydrate, fats and salts
-Contains organelles with specific functions(e.g. nucleus)
Function of cytoplasm
Site where most cellularactivities take place
Characteristics of nucleus
-Nucleus contain chromating which coils to form a rod like structure called chromosomes.
-each nucleus have 46 chromosomes, in 23 pairs made of DNA.
- Gene is a section of DNA for a special chracteristics(looks)
function of nucleus
-controls all cellular axctivities
- contain dna, the hereditary or genetic material in living thing passed down form parents to offspring
chracteristics of vacuole
-Fluid filled space
-animal cell-numerous small
plant celss-large central vacuole
Functionsof vacuole
animal- store liquid, nutrients and waste material
plant- store cell sap, liquid, nutrients and waste materials
characteristics of mitochondrion
-rod shaped organelle
Which cell is likely to contain large numers of mitocondrion
Muscles for more energy
Function of mitochondrion
Respiration occurs and food substances are oxidised to release energy
Energy released is use for cellular activities e.g. growth
Chloroplast charactreristics
Oval shaped organelle
Contains a green pigment called chlorophyll that absorbs light energy
Functrion of chloroplast
Allows photosynthesis to occur
(during photosynthesis- light energy is absorbed and then used to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugar for the plant. Oxygen is also produced.
characteristic of cell wall
-Every plant cell have cell wall
-mainly mad up of cellulose which form fibre which criss cross to form stong outer opening surrounding cell membrane
-fully permeable(allows all substances to move in and out of the cell
Function of cell wall
-Portect and support the cell
-provide rigidity and gives the cell a regular shape
-prevent the cell from bursting
why plant cells have cell wall and animal, cell do not
the cell wall provides th eplant cell with strength , shape and rigidity contrbuting to the overall rigidity of the plant ad keep it upright.
Why plant cell have chloroplast but not animal cell
Plants do not get their sugar molecules from eating, unlike animals. Hence, plants need chloroplast to trap sunlight to photosynthesis and produce sugar molecules.
Why plant cell have large central vacuole and animal cell have numerous small vacuoles.
the vacuole in plant cell mwaintain presure against the inside of the cell wall, giving the cell shape and helping to support the plant
