Mitigation strategy

A

Consumers are encouraged to only buy wood certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) where timber products have been grown sustainably. Countries/ organisation can make carbon offset payments to offset their carbon emissions. This might involve paying for existing forests to be protected, developing renewable energy alternative or planting trees.

This will preserve the current soil carbon stock. In Malaysia the Selective Management System is a sustainable approach to logging by felling selected trees and planting replacements. Forests reduce carbon emissions to the atmosphere by storing large stocks of carbon above and below ground

In 2005 the Brazilian government reduced rates of deforestation by 80%. Landowners are required to preserve 80% of virgin forest or face fines/ imprisonment. The government has created reserves in the Amazon. Brazil has reduced deforestation by 70% and this has reduced carbon emissions more than any other country.
