Communication comes in 4 forms:
- Verbal communication
- Non-verbal communication
- Written communication
- Visual communication
Includes the use of language, sounds, and tone of voice
Verbal communication
Includes body language and facial expressions
Non-verbal communication
Through journals, emails, blogs, and text messages
Written communication
Involves signs, symbols, pictures, graphics, and emojis
Visual communication
Does not only refer to the people listening to you in a puvlic speech, but rather it refers to anyone who is expected to receive the message you are sending.
Audience
3 Skills in audience analysis
- Knowing the audience
- Understanding their level; and
- Understanding how they need to receive the information
When speakers tailor messages to audiences, audience members:
> Become more attentive to the speech
Experience positive feelings toward the speaker
Open their minds to ideas that target their needs, interests, and values
Understanding an audience involves:
- Understanding situational characteristics
- Incorporating demographics
- Seeking common ground
- Identifying prior exposure
- Identifying audience disposition
- Gathering information about your audence
- Situational audience analysis
Situational characterisics (Audience):
> Size
Time
Location
Mobility
Incorporating demographics:
- Age
- Gender Composition
- Sexual orientation
- Race and ethnicity
- Religious orientation
- Socioeconomic background
- Political affiliation
- Physical and intellectual ability
Refers to the time of day or day of the week speech is given
Chronemics or body clock
The setting where you deliver the speech
Location (forum)
Taking forum into account when delivering a speech (location):

Level of technology
Sight lines
Lighting
Is the realization of gender equality in written and spoken language
Gender-sensitive language
Common heritage based on genetically shared physical characteristics
Race
Cultural background
Ethnicity
Value judgments based on the ethnic or racial background of a person or a group of people should not be made unless they are essential to the content of a communication.
Non-discriminatory language
Measure of financial resources, educational level and occupation
Socioeconomic background or socioeconomic status
Already likes you or your message
> they already agree, so get them to act
> do not spend extra time on persuasion
Sympathetic Audience
Has no opinion of you or your message
> may be apathetic or interested
> may act positively or negatively
Neutral Audience
Opposes you or your message
> You probably will not persuade them to act
> set smalle, more realistic goals
Hostile Audience
A set of written questions you ask audience before speech
