Module 1 - Anatomy & Physiology of the Vascular System Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is the task of conducting vessels?
Conducting oxygenated, nutrient rich blood out of the heart and deoxygenated blood and waste products back to the heart
What are examples of conducting vessels?
Aorta, IVC and the common iliac arteries & veins
Collecting veins contain what to prevent the backflow of blood?
Valves
Functioning vessels are what vessel? What do these vessels do?
Capillaries – gives up their nutrients and oxygen and receives the waste products and carbon dioxide from the tissues
The arteries are composed of 3 layers- what are they?
Tunica adventitia (externa) - outermost
Tunica media - middle
Tunica intima - inner
Tunica adventitia is composed of?
Elastic lamina enclosed by fibrous tissue. Fibrous tissue runs longitudinal
Tunica media is composed of?
Smooth muscle surrounded by fibrous tissue. Fibers are arranged in a circular patter
Tunica intima is composed of?
Elastic lamina lined by a layer of endothelial cells
What is vasa vasorum?
The tiny vessels that coarse throughout the tunica adventitia and provide a source of nutrients and a conduit for waste products
The capillaries are composed of an extremely _________________________________________________________.
Thin epithelial cell layer
What’s the purpose of capillaries?
Nutrient molecules and oxygen can pass out and into the surrounding tissues, and metabolic waste products (CO22 & nitrogenous waste) can pass back into the bloodstream for excretion.
What 3 structures in the body lack capillaries?
Epidermis of the skin
Lens of the eye
Cornea of the eye
What percentage of blood is in the systemic capillaries at any given time?
5%
