Define Communication
Communication is the process of making sense out of the world and sharing that sense with others by creating meaning through the use of verbal and non verbal messages
List and define the 3 models of communication
- Communication as Action
- The basic pathway of a source sending a message through a channel to the receiver - Communication as an Interaction
- Source sending a message through a channel to the receiver resulting in verbal or non verbal feedback (i.e response) - Communication as a Mutual Transaction
- Source sends message to receiver though a channel which leads to the receiver sending a message back and becoming the source. Essentially messages are sent both ways.
Impersonal Communication
Impersonal Communication occurs when you treat others as objects or respond to their roles rather then to who they are as unique persons
Interpersonal Communciation
A unique form of human communication where you acknowledge the other person as a unique person.
Define Mutual Influence
Mutual Influence means that all partners in the communication are affected by a transaction. Whilst the effect varies between the participants and the transactions everyone leaves affected in some way.
What is the Source
The source of a message is the originator of ideas and feelings expressed
What is the Message
Messages a written, spoken, and unspoken elements of communication to which people assign meaning.
What is the channel
The channel is the means by which the message is expressed to the receiver
What is the receiver
The receiver of the message is the person or persons who interpret the message and ultimately decide whether your message was understood.
What is Noise
Noise is anything that interferes with the message being interrupted as it was intended
What is feedback
Feedback is the response to the message
What are the 5 principles of Interpersonal Communication
- Interpersonal communication connects us to others
- Interpersonal communication is irreversible
- Interpersonal communication is complicated
- Interpersonal communication is governed by rules
- Interpersonal communication involves both content and relationship dimensions

- Become Knowledgeable

What is Non-verbal Communication
The bodily actions and vocal qualities that typically accompany a verbal message

- Kinesics
- Paralanguage

What is Kinesics
Is the study of communication that occurs via body movement or appearance
What is Paralanguage
- Also called vocalics paralanguage Refers to HOW you say something, whether that be genuinely, or sarcastically, etc.
What are the 5 categories of Kinesics and Paralanguage
- Emblems: Gestures used in place of words. (Pointing, thumbs up, etc)
- Illustrators: Provide a picture to accompany words. (Holding arms up to show size)
- Affect: Displays express emotion. (Crying, Head down, Frowning, Smile, etc)
- Regulators: Regulate turn-taking. (Body language showing want to speak/ leave, etc)
- Adaptors: satisfy a physical or psychological need. (Pen taping to ease irritation)
What are the functions of Eye Contact
- To monitor feedback
- To secure attention
- To regulate the conversation
- To signal the nature of the relationship
- To signal status & aggression
- To compensate for physical distance
What are the 4 categories of Touch
- Positive Emotion
- Playfulness
- Control
- Task-Oriented
What are the 4 categories of Proxemics, and what distances do they range
- Intimate (0-50cm)
- Personal (50-100cm)
- Social (100-200cm)
- Public ( 300cm +)
