how to apply
ethics?
Professionalism in teaching is dependent on the
right conduct and practice
• Your own ethics must be clear when teaching and
in harmony with the school’s code of conduct
• Consider: Private life discretion; Confidentiality
• Trust is vested in you by both the employing
authority and the parents/cares of those you teach,
it demands totally appropriate behaviour &
responses in all instances
What is
Duty of
Care?
A duty imposed by the law to take care to
minimise the risk of harm to another.

Requires that reasonable steps be taken by
staff to protect students from risks that are
reasonably foreseeable
and/or to prevent students from injuring themselves or others, or damaging property. • Does not guarantee any injury or no damage
How to apply
duty of care in
practice?
• Familiarise yourself with school policies
• Always verbally intervene if you see a dangerous
situation
• Never detain a child on his/her own. Having other
witnesses on hand is a sound precaution
• Provide adequate instructions to students
• Do not transport students in your own vehicle
• If in doubt, ask
