What problem would countries like France and the Netherlands face with colonization?
They could face stronger coountries for control of North America. Also, their people did not want to colonize these new territories.
Describe the different European nation’s relationships with Native Americans. What would come from these interactions?
The English and the Spanish were not friendly and fought with the Natives over land and religion, therefore war increased. The French and the Dutch were agreeable in order to trade with the Natives.
Why was there such a large demand for African labor? Give multiple reasons.
Europeans needed a lot of people to farm their cash crops and the Natives were dying of diseases or refusing to work.
Describe the history of slavery in Africa?
African slavery had already existed for centuries. Leaders sold war prisoners for $$$.
What was the Atlantic Slave trade? Describe the process.
The buying and selling of Africans for work in the Americas. Spain and Portugal would lead slavery into the Americas.
Which country would dominate the slave trade by 1690? What was happening to the slave population by this time?
England, The slave populations was growing from importations and having children.
How did the institution of slavery change in the Americas?
Americans put Slave to work on farms.
How did African rulers contribute to the slave trade?
African tulers traded Africans for gold, guns and other goods.
What was the Triangular trade?
Triangular transaltlantic trading network along which slaves and other goods were caarried between Europe, Africa and Americas.
What is the Middle Passage?
A voyage that brought captured Afrivans to the Americas.
What were conditions like on the voyage to the Americas?
The condiditons were extremely harsh, Many slaves were packed into the ship, many slaved died and were abused.
Describe the harsh life faced by slaves when they reached the new world. How did slaves fight back?
Life was horrible. Slaves had to work nonstop and farm the cash crops. The slaves fought back by breaking tools, working slowly and escaping.
How did the slave trade affect both Africa and the Americas?
n Africa, numerous generations lost their fittest members, families wer broken apart and guns were introduced. In America, it gave economic and cultural development, the labor helped some colonies survive and it created cultural impact that is still present today (music)
What were some of the effects of the colonization of America?
Migration of people, new trade items, new societies, and new businesses arose in America.
What was the Columbian Exchange?
What were some of the goods that were exchanged?
Global transfer of foods, plants, and animals during the Colonization of the Americas.
Squash, corn, turkey, vanilla, pumpkin, potato and tobacco.
List positive and negative effects of the Columbian Exchange:
Positive: new sources of food and nutrition (potatoes)
Negative: diseases that were brought to the Americas and killed many people, weeks came with new plants, clearing of trees for farms.
What did the establishment of colonial empires and the new wealth from the Americas prompt?
New Businessss and trade practices. This would change the face of Europe.
What is capitalism? Who would this type of economic system benefit?
Economic system based on private ownership and investment of resources like money for profit. This would benefit anyone.
What group of people would gain considerable wealth from overseas trade?
Merchants
Explain MERCHANTILISM:
$$$$ = POWER country’s power depended mainly on its wealth. Wealth, after all, allowed nations to build strong navies and purchase vital goods. As a result, the goal of every nation became the attainment of as much wealth as possible.
