Employment law is a balancing act between rights of business to run their business how they need and employees’ right to fairness and safety
4 main sources of employment law
contract law about your employment contract
laws (statutes) on employment standards, human rights and labour that vary by province, AND federal laws on labour, human rights and discrimination such as the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and these federal law apply across Canada
court decisions (common law) dealing with issues such as termination (severance) and collective bargaining
decisions of tribunals/administrative agencies such as human rights tribunals, labour boards, employment
standards boards
